A Critical Check When Buying A Used Car

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Tonight I come across a website called “Car Tuning Central” which show a video from Fifth Gear on what to look out for when buying a used car. In the short clip they showed viewers where to check the chassis for signs of repair from previous accidents.

In their test, they proved that the repaired car could have crippled someone driving it, whilst the identical “clean” car would likely see the occupants walk from the crash. An interesting video from a safety aspect.

How To Change Spark Plugs

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

In this guide we are going to show how to change spark plugs on your car and set the electrode gap for the best possible spark. Setting the correct electrode gap is essential for good fuel economy, cold starting and smooth engine idle. Set the gap too wide and the HT (High tension) coil will not provide enough voltage to provide an arc across the gap, possibly resulting in no spark at all. Set the gap too narrow and the spark will be too small.

Luckily, over the years I have found some effective odour neutralising methods which not only work for smoke but for other odours too. Dutch Invent Robotic Petrol Pump

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Dutch inventors have designed a £55,000 car fuel filling robot which fills your petrol tank without having to leave the car.

The new “TankPitStop” will only work on cars where the fuel filler cap is not locked. On entering the filling station, the robot will check your vehicle against a database of fuel cap designs and program the parameters to fit your vehicle.

The robot will work similar to how a human would fill your vehicle by carefully unscrewing the fuel filler cap and inserting the fuel hose nozzle before filling.

The inventor of the device, Nico van Staveren said that he got the idea from visiting a dairy farm yard: “I was on a farm and I saw a robotic arm milking a cow. If a robot can do that then why can’t it fill a car tank, I thought”. He added: “Drivers needn’t get dirty hands or smell of petrol again”.

Van Staveren expects to be rolling out the design in a few Dutch service stations throughout the year.

Hook And Cane Letterbox Theft Prevention Tips

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Hook and cane letterbox theft is the new way for car thieves to steal your motor. Many people leave their keys near the front door in order to remember where they are when they set off for work in the morning. Thieves have caught onto this and have started using a hook and cane method for ‘fishing’ your keys through the letterbox and drive off with your car.

As many people also have their house keys on the same keyring, the theives will also hope that you are unable to get your locks changed in time for them returning to help themselves to your house contents. There is good news however, this crime can easily be prevented by being cautious about where you place your keys. Always ensure keys are away from any access points such as windows or doors.

If you have any concerns about being a victim of crime, the Home Office website is a good resource for tips on how to prevent being a victim of crime.

How To Change Your Cars Engine Oil

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

It is extremely important to keep your cars engine well lubricated with good quality motor oil. Certain types of oil such as fully synthetic, can offer increased oil change intervals by a fraction. Regular oil changes are the most important thing you can do to help increase the life and performance of the engine. Unsure as to what all the numbers mean (ie. 15W/40) when you go looking for new oil? Take a read at our Synthetic vs Mineral oil guide which explains the two main types of oil and what these numbers mean. Check your owners manual for recommended oil change intervals.
